Local Neighborhood Stores There is something charming and magical about small grocery stores that used to inhabit the neighborhoods throughout the city of Portland. At one time, approximately 800 small stores were scattered across the city. Most were individual stores operated and owned by families. Often times, living quarters were attached to these local stores. These stores provided a valuable piece of 'fabric' to their individual neighborhoods and often were meeting places and hangouts for local residents and kids. Often times, these stores would be located on the corner of the block, thus the name "Corner Store". The owners knew most of their customers and children by name. Some of these stores even allowed the regulars to carry credit. Many of the stores are now gone. Each store has an interesting history behind it.
